Justin from Nigeria is studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University.
University is very different to school or college, but it’s a really exciting adventure. It’s a chance for you to become more independent, develop your opinions and learn more about yourself.
My motivation to go to university? To complete a degree.
A lot of people say that the years spent at university will be the best years of your life. My experience as a university student has been delightful, but it hasn’t been without its challenges.
Here are the fears I overcame at INTO Glasgow Caledonian University.
The first few weeks at university are when you might experience some difficulties, such as finding a friendship group, coping with new financial demands, and balancing your social life and academic life.
You may feel slightly shy at first and find it difficult to have a balanced social life – this was one of the dilemmas I experienced. However, I overcame this problem by stepping outside of my comfort zone to make new friends.
A good network of friends means you’ll enjoy your university life more!
This is a challenge that, as an international student, you’ll most likely encounter at some stage or another. Living in a foreign country can be difficult at first, but if you don’t want to get stuck in the expat bubble, you’ll need to learn to adjust to life abroad.
Throw yourself into clubs, societies and social trips to learn more about your home away from home. You’ll learn about the local area and get the chance to meet new people.
You may feel frightened before your exams – this is a totally natural feeling. Lack of proper preparation can lead to heightened exam nerves, so my top tip is to revise, revise, revise to cement all the information into your mind.
For coursework, plagiarism of any sort is not accepted. It’s also important to hand in your coursework before the deadline date. My top tip here is to make sure you structure your workload.
At the INTO Centre and university, you no longer have your parents on hand to look after you. Learning how to pay bills, cook for yourself and do laundry is really important.
I was afraid at first but I soon picked up all the skills I needed to look after myself. If there’s anything you ever need help with, the INTO staff are always happy to advise.
Having a positive attitude is very important as you approach your studies. Keep up your motivation by focusing on your one main goal: finishing your degree. Remember that every class and every assignment will get you one step closer to your goal.
If you want to study internationally, my advice is to not be afraid to take that first step.
