The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) established the International Children’s Book Day in 1967. This non-profit organization aims to emphasize the significance of reading for children and promotes children’s books and their authors. On the Children’s Book Day they arrange events in schools and libraries all around the world to encourage children in reading and remind adults about the books they read in childhood.
One of the ways to celebrate Children’s Book Day is to donate books to schools and libraries. But the best and most fulfilling way is to recall what book was your favorite when you were a child and read it again. You can do it either by yourself or with your kids. Take a path of your memories and recollect the times when you were reading this book as a child. Recall your feelings and thoughts of that time. Remember – did you read it yourself, or it did your parents or grandparents to you? What did this book mean to you? What did it teach you? Did it give you any new view on the world? Did it enrich your personality in any way? Talk to your kids to explain what this book gave to you and encourage them to read too. If you don’t have children, it’s a good idea to read and discuss it with your parents. It will be very nice to have a talk about your childhood with them.
Children’s Book Day is a great holiday as it reminds us of the importance of reading. Encourage your kids to read to help them grow into intelligent and creative individuals.
