Rhetorical Situation Analysis Paper

Assignment

In a paper, students will research and analyze a speech of note from U.S. history (pre-2010) to determine if the speech was an appropriate response to the situation of the time.

To begin:  go to americanrhetoric.com or other speech source to select and get a transcript of your speech.

Requirements

Students will:

  • Identify and analyze the rhetorical situation of the time and place the speech was given:
    • speaker, circumstances, audience, and constraints
  • Discuss the elements of the speech itself, including organization, style, and delivery
  • *Analyze and determine if the speech was a fitting response to that time in history
    • Was the speech appropriate to give at that time? Was there something different that should have been said or done? (This should not be in the conclusion, but its own main point)
  • Must use at least three (3) different credible sources to support analysis and claims
  • Must include MLA works cited page

Format

This is a 3-4 page research analysis paper (750-1000 words).  The paper must be double spaced, 12 point font and 1” margins. Students will gather supporting materials from a variety of credible sources (at least 3) to support their claims and respond to the claims of others. MLA formatting should be followed (see OWL at Purdue and Easy Bib for assistance). All work presented in this class must be your own with appropriate citation used when utilizing others’ ideas and/or words.

Submission

Students must use upload their paper to blackboard. No late papers will be accepted for any reason.  Your paper will be graded using the rubric attached.
