Concert Report: Dissertation- Results and Discussion

Attend one musical performances and write a report on the music for that performance. The performances may be any type of musical event for which

music is the primary focus (for example: recital, concert, opera, ballet, musical theater, open mic night at a coffeehouse, bar band). Objectively

write a report (not a review) about the music performed at the concert. Write about things that could only be known by someone who attended the

concert. You should write as if the audience for these reports was someone in our class, although only your instructor will read your report.

Write a detailed, 750-1200 word report (not a review!) of the performance you attended that highlights the musical differences among the pieces of

music performed.
Your audience for this report is a class member who was not at the performance but may be interested in this genre of music.
You should use musical terminology we have learned in this course as appropriate.
Be objective rather than subjective.
While this a personal account of your attendance, you should write in second or third person (not first person!) and in past tense.

GRADING:
Your grade will be determined by the following criteria:
1) Clear, detailed description of the musical elements of the MUSIC (5 points)
This includes descriptions of melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, and other elements.
2) Explanation of the distinctive features of this genre (2 points)
This includes instrumentation and other clues from this performance.
3) Words of advice to a future audience member (1 point)
This should be a statement that begins “Before I went to this performance, I wish I had…”
This is the only time you may use the first person in this paper
4) Mechanics (2 points)
This refers to the quality of your writing skills including, but not limited to spelling, grammar, punctuation, and organization.
