How to Choose Research Paper Topics

How To Choose Interesting Research Paper Topics Time and time again, as a college student you will need to write plagiarism free research papers. It comes with the territory so there is no avoiding it. Almost every class you take, especially in higher education, will ask you to submit a research paper. As a successful student, you will want to choose an interesting topic.

Choosing an interesting topic for your research papers is really important because it will make the paper easier to read and to write. Whoever is reading your paper will be entertained and want to know more. Keeping your reader interested can only bring good things for the outcome result of your paper.

Having an interesting topic also makes the paper easier to write. If you are personally invested in your paper and like your chosen topic, you will be more prone to doing a better job because you will want to spend more time on it. Passion always shows through writing.

Now that we have shared the benefits of not having a run-of-the-mill paper topic, let’s take a look at how exactly to choose something interesting to write about.

1. First, consider the subject. Whether it’s Science, Math, Literature, History, etc., you have to start there first, since it is the subject requirement.

If you have complete freedom of what type of paper you are to write, then choose your favorite subject.You can start off with two or three favorite subjects if you would like in order to give yourself more options.

2.Next, start brainstorming some topics! Think very broadly. To get a better idea, you should actually start by doing some background reading, or go over your notes from the class.

Make a note of topics that stand out to you, or some other ideas that may pop into your head while reading or reviewing. If you have any questions that could lead to more needed research, then make a note of these as well.

3. At this stage, you should write down all your topic ideas. For example, if you had to write a research paper within the subject of History, you could have a list like this: world history, U.S. history, history of China, the Renaissance, Medieval Times,human evolution, World War I, and so on and so forth. List anything that catches your eye. If you are dealing with a certain aspect of that subject only, then obvious keep the topics under that umbrella.

4. From there, you can start narrowing it down even further. You can either brainstorm, research, or choose a subtopic, or you can come up with a question to answer about that topic. The answer may just turn out to be your thesis statement!

Consider a combination two aspects of different subjects. This can be especially helpful if the subject you have to write about isn’t one of your favorites. If you have to write about History but really like science, think of a way to combine an aspect of history with a science concept. That would make it really interesting and perhaps groundbreaking!

5. Make sure you are following a line of thought and progression of something that truly interests you. Maybe it is something intriguing that you want to know more about, or maybe it’s something you already have some knowledge in. Either way, as long as you are encouraged and invested in the topic, it will be a good paper.

The best way to do the above is by creating a word web or a brainstorming web. Many people are very visual, so thinking of things thing way will really be helpful and make one or two potential topics stand out. The picture above is a very simple version. You start out by putting your main idea topic (History) in the center. Put the subtopics around it, and keep branching out with more and more narrowed ideas.

You don’t need to use a template, although you can find many online if you’d like. You can easily create your own with just a pencil and paper. You don’t have to use this method. You could just make a simple list. It’s really up to you and your thinking process. Whatever works best for you is how you should do it. If you haven’t tries a word web before however, then maybe you can see if it’s a good fit.

Of course, after you’ve selected your interesting topic, now the fun part begins! Go through the writing process to create an awesome research paper that everyone will want to read. Be proud of your work, and others will see that you have put a lot of effort into making your paper worth reading so they will enjoy it too.
