Developing a Democracy

Many countries across the globe have faced a wide range challenges in an attempt to achieve democracy. However, in most of the developing countries, achieving full democracy is considered challenging (Magstadt, 2017). On this basis, this paper seeks to explore how Brazil has undergone a transition in developing democracy. The paper also analyzes barriers to democracy as well as the type of democracy that need to be adopted in the country.

Over the last many years, Brazil has witnessed a substantial transition into democracy. Taking this into consideration, Martínez-Lara (2016) has explained that significant developments in Brazil in the recent past have provided partisans of democracy. The military, which dominated the country seized power in 1964m and since then, democracy in the country has been established.  In support of this, Samuels and Zucco (2014) have explained that after five decades of military dictatorship, people in the country have enjoyed high levels of political freedom. Additionally, violation of human rights in the country has declined sharply.

Despite the major steps that Brazil has made towards realizing full democracy, there are various barriers that have presented considerable challenges. To start with, Martínez-Lara (2016) argues that while the country has made the passage from authoritarian to democratic government, it is yet to develop well-defined as well as an institutionalized democratic regime.
