Using the Supreme Court’s website, research one case that deals with a contentious issue of your choice. (These issues can be racial discrimination, right to bear arms, same-sex marriage, hate speech, suicide, etc.) After finding a case, describe the Constitutional issue at the heart of the case. Summarize the points, the opinion, and at least one dissent used to come up with their conclusions. Did you agree with the majority opinion or the dissent?

The role of the Supreme Court in the judicial system of the United States cannot be overlooked. Taking this into consideration, the Supreme Court is the final judge in all cases that involve laws of Congress and the constitution (Magstadt, 2017).  The constitution has given the Supreme Court the power to check, if necessary the actions of the president, as well as Congress. The chosen case for this discussion is the Obergefell v. Hodges case, which was decided in 2015.  In this case, groups of same-sex couples sued their relevant state agencies in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky to challenge the constitutionality of those states’ bans on same-sex marriage or their refusal to recognize legal same-sex marriages that occurred in jurisdictions that allowed such marriages (Obergefell v.
