Background: Fall related injury in geriatric populations has been a major cause of disability and leading cause of sudden death across the world. According to CDC 2018, fall is known to be the seventh-leading cause of death among individuals aged 65 and older, and their prevalence has increase to more than 30 percent in recent years( Wallis, 2021). all can cause severe injury leading to permanent disfiguration and increase bedbound among older people in a long-term nursing home admission (Benedetto et., 2022). Abstract By: Title: Effective ways of fall prevention in geriatric populations who are at high risk to fall related injury or death. There are various reason fall occurs in geriatric population, loss of limb, polypharmacy, dementia, vision disorder, unhealthy substance use such as alcohol and illicit drugs, age-related physical changes and frailty play a major in fall related injury in geriatric population (Shin et al .,202). Prevention of fall is very important; the aim of this paper is to review the causes of fall and identify the effective way of preventing fall in geriatric populations. Methods: A literature review was conducted using Medline with full text; CINAHL; MedlinePlus; Medline; PubMed. The aim was to identify the cause and effective way of preventing fall in geriatric populations. The following filters were applied: Full-text, scholarly/peer-reviewed 2018–2023, academic journals. Results: Several studies indicated that occupational therapy, exercise, staff education, home and environmental modification, medication review, was effective in preventing fall related injuries. As per research, “several systemic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) explore the effectiveness of fall prevention interventions in LTCF. Based on the Vlaeyen et al. 2015 publishment, an SR and MA reported that fall prevention interventions overall reduced recurrent faller rates significantly by 21% while the number of falls or fallers was not reported” (Albasha et al., 2023). Only one study mentioned that Vitamin D reduced the fall rate as a single intervention. Other study did not show that vitamin D had a large effect on fall prevention. Based on Albasha et. al., 2023, other review by Gulka et al.’s systemic reviews (SR) and metal analysis (MA) in 2020 shows that all types of fall interventions reduced the numbers o falls (27%), fallers (20%), and recurrent fallers (30%). It further stated that exercise as s single intervention reduced the numbers of fallers (36%) and recurrent fallers (41%). However, more research shows that only exercise with a balance component or using technical devices (balance board) worked for fall reduction while and staff education and training intervention revealed benefits in reducing falls and recurrent falls(Albasha et al. 2023). According to Shin et al., 2022, Virtual intervention have the potential to increase accessibility and serve as a substitute for in-person sessions. Conclusion: Studies findings are not consistent, more randomized control research is needed to better understand the effective fall prevention in geriatric populations.
