Applying Research Skills Medication errors are a major concern in healthcare and it is a major concern amongst healthcare professionals. Medication errors can lead to adverse drug event and may cause death. A typical example of medication error is the patient is prescribed Tylenol which contains acetaminophen and the patient is already taking another medication that contains the same ingredient which can lead to liver damage. Another simple example is patient is prescribed 20 mg Imitrex once every 24 hours for migraine but was given twice daily. The list can go on and on with numerous medication errors that we as providers can prevent. We as healthcare professionals are aware that medication errors can take place anywhere such as hospitals, homes, elderly homes, doctors office and also poor identification of patient meaning, the patient is not properly identify before giving the medication and might be given to the wrong patient.. These are all incidents that I have personally witnessed in my work environment, hence I believe it is utmost important to address these concerns immediately to prevent further adverse events. However, I believe that medication errors can be avoided by having effective communication and read back information with the provider. Identifying Academic Peer-reviewed Journal Articles Using Summons, Capella University Library’s search, I was able to access Information/databases relating to healthcare, such as ProQuest Central and Pub Med Central . I used key words medication errors, patient safety for peer-reviewed resources/literature related to medication errors and patient safety. I also used scholarly and peer-reviewed journals, using journal article as the publication type, medicine and nursing as the subjects and articles published within the last five years date range
