Therefore, this essay follows a case study of Joe, an 8-year old boy, to determine how he was diagnosed with PTSD and some of the interventions provided for him. Briefly explain the neurobiological basis for PTSD illness. The neurobiology of PTSD is quite complex, but it encompasses the neurochemical, neuroendocrine, and neuroanatomical basis within the neural system. The neuroendocrine features surround the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), coordinating the body's response to stress. The response begins in the hypothalamus by releasing the corticotropin hormone (CRH) through the paraventricular neurons (Lanius et al., 2018). The hormone then stimulates the release of the adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) at the anterior pituitary, and this then enables the production of glucocorticoids like cortisol from the adrenal cortex. Cortisol, through negative feedback, then through the negative feedback, controls the HPA, which leads to the reduction of the noradrenergic stress response. Continued stress due to exposure to cortisol would then lead to adverse effects in the brain, specifically the hippocampus, which then leads to impairment in neurogenesis and neuroplasty. The neurochemical basis surrounds the abnormal regulation of the catecholamines, opioid neurotransmitters, peptides, and amino acids found within the circuits in the brain and therefore integrate or regulate stress and response to fear.
