Benchmark-Patient’s Spiritual Needs: Case Analysis

Patient autonomy is premised on the right of every patient to have the pleasure of making
their own decisions regarding the medical care that they receive from a given health provider.
The patient's autonomy is reinforced with the idea that the health care provider or family
members of the patient, spouse, and friends have no right to influence the medical decision
concerning a given patient's health condition (Cook et al.,2020). Patient autonomy permits the
physician or health care provider to guide the patient with revelations concerning the patient's
state. However, it is critical to point out that patient autonomy strongly prohibits the physician or
health care provider, or family members from deciding for the patient without their consent.
Intervention and Ethical decision-making
As mentioned in the preceding paper, James autonomy regarding his condition of acute
glomerulonephritis and kidney failure. At the outset, James was brought to the hospital when he
had complications linked to the strep throat infection. As mentioned by the medical practitioners,
James's condition was acute enough to warrant immediate attention. Currently, James is eight
years old. According to the case study, information relayed is quite unclear on James's influence
with the decisions about his health (Schaffer et al.,2017). Indeed, as it is stated, James's acute
glomerulonephritis condition would essentially clear by itself, as the strep infection tends to
improve itself with time or with an antibiotic.
Also, according to the case study, before James's condition deteriorated, he was in perfect
shape with no significant hindrance to perform regular chores. As a result, he was in a state of
saying whether the medical choices of the parents were well for him or not. However, despite his
young age, with a bit of guidance from both his parents, he would be empowered to guide him on

the extent of his decisions in his life. The patient's autonomy premised on the element of respect
of his point of view as an autonomous individual.
Again, the decisions reached by both Mike and Joanne should be re-evaluated as to
whether they meant well for James informed by the medical findings of the physician. James as a
person, deserves the right to say in the decisions being made affecting his life despite being a
child. In the event, some of the decisions made by James's father, Mike, ended up affecting his
life leading to incapacitation. It would not be right from a bioethical perspective. As James's
father, Mike would have harmed his son with the decision to seek faith healing instead of
following the steps given by the physician. Due to the state of deterioration that James suffered,
it pointed to the harm that came forth from choosing faith over medical expertise. Also, the
physician as a health provider had no right to permit Joanne and Mike to abuse the autonomy of
James, who was the patient.
Christians view sickness, health, and medical intervention.
Sickness and death are realities of human life. Christians believe in God and his power to
save and protect them from all ailments, sickness, and calamities. Thus, Christians should
believe in the healing spirit of Jesus Christ, and sickness should be deemed as a temptation and
way that God is testing their faith and resilience in Him. John 9: 3 states, "Jesus answered, His
blindness has nothing to do with his sins or his parent's sins. He is blind so that God's power
might be seen at work in him". Jesus answered his disciples concerning the source of the
blindness of a man born in that manner (Rieg et al.,2018). The disciplines thought that the man
was blind due to the parent's shortcomings or the man's sin. However, the statements by Jesus
remind Christians that diseases and sickness are a pointer to God's power manifested in people's
lives.

Also, concerning medical intervention, Christians should be open-minded and have an
objective mindset with matters of medical intervention. Medical interventions are measures that
seek to improve the health status of patients who suffer certain conditions. Therefore, as a
Christian, it is vital to support the actions and interventions that medical professionals take to
improve the lives of their patients. However, it
