Bullying: Causes and Effects

 

Bullying has been known as a common problem in schools and around the globe. The

definition of bullying in Merriam Webster dictionary is: “Abuse and mistreatment of someone

vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful, etc.” Bullying can be enacted by a student, a

friend, co-worker, or even a parent. There are three main causes of bullying, which include

someone looks different, different interests, and social media becomes a platform for bullying.

The main effects of bullying are the victim feels isolated, lower self-esteem, and suicide.

A significant cause of bullying is someone looks different. Physical appearance can be a

person’s height, weight, face, hair, and etc. Everybody has a unique look, and we do not have any

interference with our looks. The main actor of the movie Wonder is a boy whose name is Auggie

Pullman. Auggie has had 27 surgeries since his birthday to help him see, breathe, and make him

look somewhat more ordinary. He deals with his facial deformity and because of his facial

deformity, he has been home-schooled and he frequently wears an astronaut helmet to hide his

face. In the movie Wonder, Mr. Tushman who is a school principal, says: “Auggie can't change

how he looks. Maybe we should change how we see.” However, his parents have made a decision

to send him to school for the fifth grade. When he entered the school, students bullied him as

well as abused him because of his facial deformity.

A second main cause of bullying is having different interests. There are a variety of

interests for people based on their mentality or their willing. According to video 48 Hours: CBS:
