Diagnosis and staging of cancer

A cancer diagnosis is a process by which a doctor performs a physical exam and tests on

a patient and evaluating on the symptoms that the patient has to help in determining whether the

patient has cancer or not. There are various methods that a doctor can use to diagnose cancer.

Physical exams, laboratory tests, imaging tests, and Biopsy are some of the popular methods

used by doctors to treat patients. The biopsy is the surest method used by doctors to tell if a

patient has cancer (Toney-Butler & Thayer, 2020). Depending on the symptoms that a patient

has, tests are carried out to diagnose cancer. Computer tomography (CT), x-rays, and

ultrasonography are some of the imaging studies done by doctors when they suspect that a

patient has cancer. Computer tomography is usually done on patients who have symptoms of

recurrent headaches, while x-rays can be done on patients who exhibit symptoms of weight loss

and have prolonged cough. The most common cancer symptoms are weight loss, general body

weakness, vomiting, and excessive sweating. When cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, this is

usually an advantage to the patient since it provides a high chance of curing the disease.

There are various methods used by doctors to diagnose cancer. Firstly, is the physical

exam. In this approach, the doctor tries to feel parts of the patient's body that may have tumors

which may indicate cancer. Changes in the skin color and the broadening of body organs may be

considered abnormalities by the doctor, and they may indicate the existence of cancer in your

body. Secondly, laboratory tests are also another approach used. Here the doctor obtains a sample

of blood and urine of a patient to try and identify some abnormalities in them that may have

symptoms of cancer (Rock et al., 2020). For example, a complete blood count blood test which is

usually done on leukemia patients may reveal abnormalities in the white blood cells. Imaging

tests are also another approach that is used, here the doctor tries to examine the internal organs

and bones of the patient. Computer tomography (CT) scan, ultrasound, X-ray, and magnetic

resonance imaging (MRI) are some of the most common imaging tests used by doctors to

examine the internal organs of patients. Lastly is the Biopsy method which involves your doctor

obtaining samples of cells from a patient for various tests in the laboratory. This is the surest
