In the Great Depression of 1929 the yard purchased by Arthur is near to go out of business but at the nick of the moment an opportunity from the corrupt Romanian Government arrives which put Arthur in an ethical dilemma. Daimler-Benz and Chrysler on the other hand face problem of colliding organizational cultures leading to friction between both companies resulting in ineffectiveness. Despite being a Billion $ merger the companies are not being able to work together which is resulting in hostility and waste of the invested resources. Case Study 1: Blackley Shipyard Question.1 Strengths Arthur Lawrence seems like a young, energetic, sheer-willed, and empathetic personality. The way he took on the dying shipyard of Blackley to save the people from unemployment is a commendable act of leadership(Rath & Conchie, 2008). Being a relatively younger and inexperienced person, Arthur Lawrence falls on the definition of theGreat Man Theory of Leadership. Which states that some people are born leaders, they possess certain traits which make them successful in leading people, they do not need experience or knowledge to lead people behind instead their instincts and intuition guide them to be as effective as experienced leaders(Cawthon, 1996). Great Man Theory of Leadership operates under two assumptions: 1.Born Leaders Possess Traits by Birth 2.Born Leader Only Rise When the Need is Great Just like the first assumption the second assumption also fits in with the Arthur Lawrence situation. The town of Blackley needed a leader to save their only source of earning otherwise it would have become a ghost town leaving its people unemployed.
