Understanding the different learning styles is important for everyone. It allows them to have a better understanding of how they can maximize their learning experiences and improve their capability to process and retain information. Accordingly, knowing about the various learning styles is also important for any educator. Since educators have the responsibility to know how to create an optimal learning environment for their students, they must also know how to create effective learning strategies depending on each one’s learning style. In this article, I would like to focus on my learning style, namely a multimodal learning style. In the succeeding sections of this article, I would provide a summary of my VARK questionnaire results and determine how to use this learning in my studies and my future practice.
Learning Preference
The VARK questionnaire showed that my preferred learning style is multimodal learning. Multimodal learning is a kind of learning preference that combines the individual’s various senses including their auditory, visual, and kinesthetic systems, among others CITATION Law19 \l 1033 (Lawless, 2019). Particularly, my VARK results showed that my order of learning preference is kinesthetic (n=14), visual (n=13), aural (n=10), and read/write (n=6) learning by order of preference. Since I am a multimodal learner, the results show that I like a combination of diagrams, visuals, auditory supplements, and even personal interaction with others, among others.
Personally, I believe that the results of the VARK questionnaire are precise. Even though I prefer the use of visuals such as graphs, diagrams, and maps, I also like to supplement this learning with other strategies like reading supplementary materials, listening to auditory lectures, and even acting out what I have learned or experience. It is by combining these kinds of learning styles that I feel more comfortable with whether studying for my academics or even in learning a new skill in life. Perhaps, one of the most illustrative examples of this is when I was still trying to learn the guitar. Rather than just using diagrams for the chords, I prefer supplementing these diagrams with video demonstrations, auditory cues, and also daily practice, among others. Thus, for anything that I am trying to learn in life, I realized that it is the combination of these strategies that usually make my learning experience better and easier.
In line with one’s practice and future career as an educator, I believe that knowing about the students’ learning preferences is one of the most important things that I should take into consideration.
