BON’s are essential to public health. They oversee the implementation of regulations that have been put in place by regulatory bodies. They also ensure that the nurses are operating in a safe and competent manner and hence they are promoting the health of those under their care. In the course of executing their duties, some nurses may violate the laws, the boards of nursing are responsible for taking disciplinary actions against them. In the education system, they license bodies that offer examinations, and approve nursing programs. They regulate advanced nursing practice and hence ensure that nurses at all levels have to operate within the law. The assistance is not only to the public but also to the nurses as it provided guidance on their scope of practice. The nurses also benefit as they are educated on new laws and changes to existing laws, and also have the advantage of using certain titles once they are licensed.

Nursing associations are not formed by the government, rather, they are formed by private individuals. However, they are regulated by laws. The associations are headed by a Board of Directors which is elected by members of the association. The associations work to advance the interests of the nurses in the legislature, politics, and practice matters. They ensure that the interests of its members are advanced and prevent any minimizing of their interests.  In addition to advancing their interests, the nursing associations also help the nurses in advancing their careers by providing opportunities of advancing their education, work related competencies, and certifications among others.

The boards of nursing and nursing associations have distinct roles and structures. However, they are both aimed at advancing the interests of the nurses and ensuring that the patient receive safe and competent care.
