Development of My Learning Philosophy

Learning and teaching often impart various individuals in numerous ways. Learning and
teaching style of different people is uniquely suited to their needs and understanding of a
phenomenon. Similarly, other individuals have personal models, value systems and philosophies
that guide their learning and teaching goals and objectives (Billings & Halstead, 2019). Thus, for
any teacher to have a meaningful impact in disseminating knowledge, they have to conceptualize
and seriously understand each learner's learning style. More significantly, an effective teacher for
any learner have to adopt the following guides into consideration; the audience, motivating
factors and the environment of relaying the same. Health education is designed to positively
influence the population's lifestyles given how it targets the behaviour and attitudes of
individuals to improve their health. Also, a teaching philosophy adopted should be premised on
generating productivity to the student/ client and the teacher/ nurse. Therefore, the following
paper delves into the authors teaching style, theories underpinning the teaching model, values
and belief system.
Personal Learning Style
Learning is essentially the process aligned to effecting change that happens due to
experiences and, therefore, tends to enhance the capacity for performance and future learning.
Different learners experience change processes at various levels, such as dissemination of
knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. Thus, in a well-guided learning process, learners have a
chance to experience the application of ideas and concepts from a different perspective. In
particular, my learning style is inclined towards kinesthetic learning and the auditory model of
learning that serves me in several scenarios.

In essence, the theoretical concepts that I have learned in the years of study are better
understood using the auditory model and practical hands-on demonstration that is relayed via
tactile learning (Biradar et al., 2020). The auditory learning style is premised on the
understanding that occurs via listening that largely depends on hearing and speaking. In a health
care environment, it is critical to listen attentively to what patients say to effective design a
course of action to design solutions to their problems. Similarly, auditory learning models come
in handy when sorting through information relayed to them by patients.
Indeed, my learning is reinforced through listening and repeating information relayed by
patients to ascertain their accuracy. While at a fellowship program, I designed a raft of flashcards
to remind myself of critical medication information constantly. In the same breath, I recalled
class concepts through reading the content out aloud. Likewise, I often internalize practice
theoretical concepts by having physical touch. An example was when the lab instructor required
me to showcase whether I had established how to change the colostomy bag on the laboratory
floor using the return demonstration concept. Thus, through well-guided steps and guidelines,
my ability to demonstrate the skill reinforced my understanding of class concepts. As for the lab
instructor, when the student demonstrates the real-time application of class concepts, they tend to
reduce chances of making mistakes in future when handling a client in a real-life situation.
On the other hand, kinesthetic learning enables me to showcase hands-on work through
touch, movement, and new concepts. Therefore, as a health practitioner, I can learn by
demonstrating action while interacting with patients through interrogations. As such, when
patients present their challenges through movements and touch, I can better understand them.
Learning style linked to teaching style

As previously stated, when revising for exams and studying, flashcards and short
summarized notes come in handy while working along with teams to better understand the
concept. Consequently, to share with a learner who is not equipped with auditory and kinesthetic
learning styles, I tend to incline a participatory and learner-centred learning model. Through the
learner-oriented approach, the students tend to be the pillar and core of displaying what is
learned, whereas the teacher acts as a guide and mentor to the learning process. Nonetheless, as a
mentor, the teacher assesses the student competencies through group projects and tests.
