Differentiate between \”leading\” and \”managing.\”

 Differentiating Leadership and Management

Leadership and management differ in roles. Leadership roles include promoting change; leaders find new approaches, take risks and understand people to improve performance and gain commitment to goals. Another essential role for leaders is motivating and inspiring followers to create a passion for tasks, visions, and shared goals (Cherry & Jacob, 2019). On the other hand, management roles entail directing a group through supervisory or administrative positions. Managing is task-oriented and done through binding rules and delegation of responsibility to members. Anoth

er function in management is controlling; managers control resources, systems, structures, and their juniors to establish standardization for efficiency and avoid risks.

How Roles Overlap

Management and leadership overlap in their goals in that they both involve influencing others towards improved performance and attainment of common goals. Leadership is more about who one is as a person and how one can influence the team, while management is more about using resources to influence team success (Azad et al., 2017). Again, leadership skills set an individual to become a good manager. Leading and managing overlap in skills and abilities such as optimism, decisiveness, open communication, and integrity. Leading and managing create a framework of abilities and skills for driving team success.

Clinical Application

As a nurse leader, I have taken advantage of the overlap to make my role flexible and accommodating. For example, rather than having the junior conform to the system structure, I allow them to be creative and suggest new approaches to improve performance. I also use the risk-taking abilities of a leader to challenge the status quo to minimize any inefficiencies that may be impacted by unnecessary conformity.
