Discuss the need for effective communication in a multidisciplinary healthcare setting

Effective communication is critical in multidisciplinary nursing setting since it enhances
patient outcomes and facilitates collaboration among the health professionals. Previous studies
have indicated that communication will empower patients and immediate family and enable the
members to participate fully in the delivery of care. In addition, effective communication
improves the likelihood of adherence to self-management and treatment offered by the
multidisciplinary team (Boxwell, 2010). Effective communication helps in reducing medical
errors which can cause death of patient or severe injuries. Effective communication is needed by
multidisciplinary setting sine it facilitates collaboration of different health department and
improves problem-solving among the professionals (Ulutasdemir, 2018).
Effective communication leads to efficiency in preparation of patient treatment plans by
ensuring all involved professionals participate in decision making. Effective communication
improves the health literacy since patients are capable of comprehending and understanding

basic medical information regarding their sickness and make appropriate treatment choices
(Masters, 2018). Effective communication assists in the integration of electronic medical records
for the patients which is important in ensuring patients attend all appointments. It is important to
implement effective communication channels in the multidisciplinary team in order to guarantee
high quality patient care and minimize the readmission rates. Communication improves the
patient’s experience and creates a work culture of collaboration. In this regard, physicians and
other professionals are able to understand patient perceptions and feelings and respond to their
health care needs in a more appropriate manner (Ulutasdemir, 2018).
