The IOM, considering nursing to be the largest sector of the health profession with over 3 million RNs and seeking to strengthen this component of the healthcare workforce to become leaders in quality healthcare and improving the system was inspired to partner with RWJF and assembled an exceptional group of professionals drawn from the business, academia, health care delivery, and policy areas. The question to take into consideration by the committee was: What roles can nursing assume to address the increasing demand for safe, high-quality, and effective healthcare services? (IOM, 2011) They considered diverse viewpoints even from outside the nursing profession in their deliberations. The two organizations combined staff and resources in collaboration to produce a report published in 2010 entitled "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health" which pointed out how the nursing profession should devise and utilize change for the benefit of the future of nursing (IOM, 2011). Key Messages in the IOM Report The committee, in the course of its deliberations, came up with four key messages that speak to the transformation of the nursing profession in three critical areas; these are practice, education, leadership, and the collection of better data to aid planning for the necessary improvements to the nursing profession and general health care system. Here are the four key messages: 1.Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. The committee wanted a situation where nurses could live to the full potential of their training and be rewarded for their abilities. For example, Nurse Practitioners (NP) or Advanced Practical Registered Nurses (APRNs) are being identified in addition to nursing practice to diagnose and practice medicine under the supervision of a Medical Doctor and this
