Discussion: Evaluating Culture from the Nursing Perspective What happened to change the culture of smoking in Poland?

Smoking become a culture in Poland during the 1980s with about 70% of adult men between 20 and 60 years of age smoking daily. This created a need for change that was then implemented with that smoking rates significantly reduced in the 1990s. The change that targeted the smoking culture in Poland was focused on applying a legislative approach. This involved enacting laws concerning four significant health policies. Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.Firstly, requiring legible and easily visible warnings on the health hazards of smoking to be included in all tobacco packaging. Secondly, placing a ban on smoking in enclosed workspaces and health centers thereby reducing concerns about second-hand smoke. Thirdly, placing a ban on electronic media advertising for tobacco products. Finally, placing a ban on the sale of tobacco to minors. These legislative changes helped in reducing access to tobacco among minors while raising awareness about the health hazards concerned with using tobacco (Kinder, n.d.).Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.

Social and political factors allowed cigarette smoking to become a part of the Polish culture?

There are three social and political factors that allowed cigarette smoking to become a part of the Polish culture. The first factor is the fact that smoking was an ingrained social norm so that the population felt that smoking was a normal and acceptable activity with minimal demerits. Secondly, a lot of money was being spent on cigarette advertising thereby helping to make the public increasingly aware of the available tobacco products. Thirdly, the population was largely unaware of the link between health and smoking with many considering cigarettes as largely un-harmful (Kinder, n.d.).Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.

Reflecting on your own practice, how do you overcome cultural bias?

Cultural bias is overcome through cultural awareness and sensitivity. This requires a willingness to acknowledge, accept and respect the uniqueness in others. In addition, it requires communication so as to understand what is different about others instead of simply making assumptions that may be erroneous (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.

Do you find it more difficult to deal with some groups than others?

Yes, it is more difficult to deal with some groups than others. That is because of inherent biases that come from what is popularly noted about a culture. For instance, I understand that Muslims are very strict about gender and require that care be provided by medical personnel of same gender as the patient. This makes it difficult to coordinate care delivery as the same problems are not noted for the Christian culture (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.

How do people use the cultural information that they learn about others?

The cultural information learnt about others is used to communicate and interact with the members of the group. In fact, the information is used to improve cultural awareness and sensitivity (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.

Do you think this leads to stereotyping?

Yes, it leads to unintentional stereotyping. After dealing with a cultural group all too often and determining trends, there will be a tendency to subconsciously associate the cultural group with the trends thus resulting in stereotyping (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).Discussion: Evaluating Culture From the Nursing Perspective.

Does cultural knowledge influence or change your practice and interaction with others?

Cultural knowledge has an influence on practice and interaction with others. It improves interactions and helps in building better relationships that are better able to collect information and communicate instructions (Truglio-Londrigan & Lewenson, 2018).
