(dictionary.com). This paper will discuss the impacts of social media in healthcare, employment,
and education and correlations of accreditation, reimbursement, quality of care, and informatics
in healthcare delivery. There is an increase in social media, web, and mobile technologies use in
healthcare used to support patient-centered care.
Patients and healthcare professionals benefit from managing health conditions. The use of
this form of communication is used by many people of different ages not just the young. Social
Media is readily available through smartphones, tablets, computers, and any applications in any
digital devices. Social media mostly used include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram,
Snapchat, YouTube, Pinterest, blogs.
Hospital Policies on Use of Devices and Social Media
Appropriate use of social media is emphasized when it comes to healthcare and patient
information protection. Implementation of information security in preventing misuse and
exploitation of information and information technology is important. Every healthcare
organization needs to recognize the importance of securing information (Rodrigue, De La Tore,
Fernandez, & Lopez, 2013). Personal health information related to patient care is protected under
HIPAA in the US. HIPAA protection includes the sharing, transferring, and disclosing of any
patient information like health history, medications, allergy lists, diagnostic results,
demographics, advance directives and many more. Despite that social media use is more

popular, HIPAA privacy rules must be observed especially by the employees involved in patient
care. HIPAA rules prohibit posting or sharing verbal or non-verbal of personal health information
to anybody not involved in that particular patient care.
Health care organizations like hospitals should establish policies with specific guidelines for
use of social media by their employees, volunteers, and guests regarding the use, storage, and
transmission of personal and professional data. The guidelines must follow HIPAA privacy rules
to ensure the security of protected health information. The employees of a company are expected
to act and talk professionally, differentiate personal information or opinions from protected
information. No personal devices like smartphones allowed in the healthcare floors or the
patient’s a home in the case of home health care setting. Employee’s awareness is raised on not
carrying online communication with patients on matters not related to their treatments. Picture
taking or video recording are prohibited in patient care environments.

policies set forth for the protection of patient’s privacy. Some of the policies are against
violation of any local, state, federal and the international laws and regulation regarding content
received or send, transmission of any material by uploading, posting, and emailing unlawful,
disruptive, threatening, profane, abusive, harassing, embarrassing, tortuous, defamatory, obscene,
libelous or invasive of another's privacy. Impersonation of any other person or entity or falsely
