Introduction

Health education plays a vital role in health promotion since it identifies emerging health
issues and trends within the population and disseminates health information that is geared at
finding effective health interventions of addressing the health problems (Perez & Luquis, 2013).
Health education assists in minimizing the adverse impacts of health disparities thus promoting
equal access of healthcare services. Health education supports the development of health polices
and legislation that influence key decisions regarding the health of the community (Sharma,
2016).
Nursing process is utilized in developing health education since it provides key statistical
data and information regarding the signs and symptoms of diseases. Nursing process supports
health education research that aim at discovering evidence-based strategies of controlling
diseases (Perez & Luquis, 2013).
A contemporary issue that a family may face today is substance abuse. Substance and
drug abuse is common is a global issue that is prevalent in many families across the world. A
nurse should several steps in plan of action that aim at ensuring substance abuse prevention and
treatment of the addicted family members (Perez & Luquis, 2013). The initial step in the health
education plan is educating the family on the nature of the problem, the negative consequences,
and treatment plans available to addicted people (Sharma, 2016). The second step in the
education plan is to request the family to undergo screening for substance abuse disorders and
treat the affected individuals in order to minimize the severity of the symptoms. The last step is
to help the family attain behavior change and acquire personal skills that are useful in preventing
relapse (Sharma, 2016).
