Reduced practice refers to a nurse practitioner's (NPs) inability to perform "in at least one element of NP practice" (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2022). According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (2022), Illinois law requires NPs to practice with supervision under a health provider to provide patient care whom they work with collaboratively. NPs may also be limited in one or more NP practice areas due to state law. However, Illinois does allow NPs to practice without collaborative agreement as long as they fulfill certain requirements such as "completion of at least 250 hours of continuing education or training" and fulfillment of 4,000 hours of experience in the clinical field after obtaining a national certification (Illinois General Assembly, 2022). 2.Identify forms of competition on the state and national level that interfere with APN's ability to practice independently. a.On a state and national level, Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) have to compete with physicians and physician assistants who may traditionally be viewed as more essential and skilled within healthcare than an APN. In my personal experience, some patients view APNs as a glorified nurse and don't necessarily understand the role they bring into their care. It seems that many physicians are hired and sought after due to their qualification as an MD and because of the constant need for providers in healthcare. Once an MD is present, some patients don't see the need for an APNs work. On the other hand, physician assistants and APNs are competing for similar positions which creates employment difficulty. According toBrom et al. (2018), advocating for NPs allows NPs to expand their scope of practice on a state level and furthers opportunities on a national level for reimbursement for services provided. In fact, for NPs in states who do have full scope of practice, it has significantly shown to help fill the gap in healthcare and "practice Medicaid acceptance" for primary healthcare providers (Barnes et al., 2017)
