Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties

The nursing specialty I have chosen as stated right at the beginning of this plan is that of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The second specialty that would have been my second choice had I been unable to get the FNP specialty is Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or PMHNP (Walden University, n.d.). The FNP and the PMHNP both belong to the role of certified nurse practitioner or CNP, which is one of the four roles of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) recognized in the Consensus Model. The other four roles are certified nurse midwife (CNM), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), and the certified registered nurse anesthetist or CRNA (Registered Nursing, 2019). Both FNP and PMHNP require at least a postgraduate master’s degree, although the Institute of Medicine recommends the doctorate degree as the most suitable entry point for all APRNs. Both nurse specialists are educated and trained to assess, examine, order investigations for, treat, and follow-up patients that fall under their population foci. They are able to do this to the fullest extent of their training and education especially in states that grant full practice authority (FPA). NURS 6003N – Part 6: Finalizing the Plan.
The FNP is a nurse specialist who takes care of individuals and families across the lifespan. That means that the FNP can treat all types of diseases and injuries in infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and the aged. In short, they are family clinicians, able to take care of everybody in the family. This is done mostly at the primary health care level where the FNP then refers any complicated case upwards to physician specialists. On the other hand, the PMHNP can treat all types of mental illnesses and psychological problems in infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and the aged. This means that they treat and manage mental illnesses across the lifespan. The PMHNP who has full practice and full prescriptive authority is able to prescribe psychoactive medications and other psychopharmacologic agents that include scheduled medications. Just as the FNP is able to manage illness and disease using nonpharmacological interventions such as isotonic and resistance exercise for hypertension in obesity; the PMHNP is also able to employ nonpharmacological measures in mental health in the form of psychotherapy. Both specialties require certification for practice, with the FNP getting certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The PMHNP also gets certification after a competency examination from the ANCC (Nurse Practitioner Schools, 2019). I settled for FNP because it would offer a wider space for practice in that I would be handling all the types of diseases I studied to manage. This is in stark contrast to the PMHNP who is restricted to managing only mental illnesses. I therefore felt being a FNP would be more fulfilling. NURS 6003N – Part 6: Finalizing the Plan.
