Addressing the overtime problem on nurses within the state of Michigan requires a legislative process that seeks to increase the staffing numbers for Registered Nurses. Advocating for better working rights for Registered Nurses allows for better patient care; increasing staffing ensures a higher nurse-to-patient ratio, hence, better focus and concentration in dealing with patients (Bowling, 2018). Better working hours also improve motivation, productivity, and quality of life. Working in unity allows for improved financial performance in the industry, making it possible to sponsor or fund research for better healthcare. Increasing staffing numbers for nurses would most be effective through employment and training of new nurses (Stadhouders et al., 2019). An aging population in the United States has been identified as a significant threat to the healthcare system. A high number of older people, enabled by improved quality of life and longevity, translates to increased patient inflows. The aging baby boomer population and translates to an aging population of primary care nurses. These, coupled with a low number of new and young registered nurses, translates to a staffing problem. Offering scholarship and training programs for medical students may motivate more to take primary healthcare as a career, thus, help improve staffing numbers in the future.
