IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing The Institute of Medicine (IOM), formed in 1970 is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision-makers and the public (IOM, 2009). It comprises medical professionals working to provide evidence-based research and make recommendations concerning healthcare improvements and science. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and IOM, in 2008 assigned a committee on the future of nursing to appraise, transform and respond to an evolving healthcare system about the nursing profession. They came up withThe Institute of Medicine (IOM) reporttagged: "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health" released in. This paper will describe the RWJF committee initiative that produced the IOM report, the key recommendations of the report, and their contribution to healthcare transformation will be discussed. New Mexico state-based action coalitions and how they help to advance the goals of the IOM report will be considered while summarizing two initiatives by the state's action coalition and their contribution to the nursing profession. Finally, state-based impediments to advancement, and how they were surmounted will also be discussed. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative RWJF, established in 1972 is a large philanthropic organization dedicated to improving health. In collaboration with IOM, they appointed a committee in 2008 with a 2-year goal of producing formal assessments and recommendations related to the future of nursing. This explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by healthcare reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system (IOM, 2011)
