Introduction

An annotated bibliography presents a list of citations that briefly summarizes the journal articles that act as sources of information. In addition, it explains why the articles are important for the topic being researched. In presenting the annotated bibliography, an understanding of the topic of interest is demonstrated while allowing for a better understanding of the sources as they are carefully read and evaluated. Given that annotated bibliographies extend beyond annotations and summaries as the value of each source is demonstrated, it ends up indicating that critical thinking was applied to develop a point of view on the topic.The Use of Clinical Systems to Improve Outcomes and Efficiencies. The time available to nurses to complete their professional responsibilities and roles is at a premium, especially in the face of worsening staffing shortages. In fact, nurses time is of significant concern as one of the highest costs of health care. The article acknowledges that nurses time is a concern and there is a need to ensure that it is used efficiently and effectively. Towards this end, the study sought to explore the impact of health information technology on nurses’ time by applying a systematic review of relevant literature. The authors note that the topic has been extensively explored with 1,647 articles identified through a database search for publications between January 2004 and December 2019 using PRISMA guidelines.The Use of Clinical Systems to Improve Outcomes and Efficiencies. The article notes that most health information technology systems free up time from documentation so that nurses are able to spend more time on delivering direct care and value adding activities such as inter-professional communication. Still, there are concerns that the technology systems have increased the time nurses spend on documentation (between 22% and 46%). Based on the research results presented in the article, it is clear that there is evidence supporting the use of health information technology to free up nurses’ time thus allowing them to spend more time on other activities. The authors are credible individuals as indicated by their backgrounds. The authors are academicians in health care subjects, are practicing medical personnel, and are also engaged by medical research institutions. They have clearly presented the research methodology, thus making the research objective and reducing opportunities for bias. The article is helpful in exploring the importance of investing in health information technology as tools for improving nurse effectiveness and efficiency. Electronic health record (EHR) is increasingly being adopted by medical facilities as a tool for keeping records, identifying patient needs and making responses to care, as well as supporting clinical reasoning. The article acknowledges that EHR is a valuable documentation tool, and suggests that it has the potential for improving patient care, inter-professional communication and patient experiences through integrating clinical content and workflows relevant to the clinical status of the patient, role of medical personnel and venue of care delivery. Given this awareness, the study sought to explore the value of implementing EHR in a quality improvement project with regards to whether the times and event logs can measure the efficiency and quality of the clinical process.
