Many resources are spent on recruiting foreign nurses. It is a fast-growing private sector business. If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into fixing the problems that lead to this shortage of nurses, would the need to recruit foreign nurses decrease? Why or why not? Comment 1:

I do believe that if, for example here, the U.S.A. put more resources and effort in advancing and encouraging potential nurses and current nurses to advance we would not require foreign nurse recruiting. I say this because the educational system is so not as friendly to US citizen nurses or nurses in general due to lack of instructors, and facilities able to provide the appropriate education and training to advance these students. Having talked to many nurses I know who had a difficult time getting into the RN program, as well as LVN to RN due to room, lack of instructors, cost,  or institutions not offering the specific program needed, has made it  extremely challenging to allow for advancement or even to obtain the AA in Nursing. If the US would put more resources, including those being utilized to recruit outside help, instead into the educational system to allow for easier accesses and affordability we would not require outside/foreign nurses to fill the void.  We would have more potential US citizen nursing professionals ready to join the workforce yearly. And, if each nation did the same in their own communities, they would not lose their medical professionals to other countries.

Another form to encourage potential nursing professionals into the workforce would be to foster better work environments. Higher nurse to patient ratios, higher pay, full tuition assistance for higher education, tuition re-imbursement for already graduated nurses, improved healthcare benefits.

The Global nursing workforce and patient safety culture video discussed some of these topics. Poor work conditions and pay in other countries encourages these nurses to seek employment opportunities elsewhere. (Nurs 440-Issuesand trends in nursing, 2021)
