Quality drivers of high performance in healthcare systems matter for medical surgeon units and family nurse practitioners because they strive to motivate the clinicians to improve their services due to the ever-evolving nature of health care industry. In many instances, quality touches on critical areas such as facility management, patient care, and financial processes. Therefore, understanding critical factors that drive quality improvement is essential to nurse practitioners in the medical surgeon unit and family nurses when it comes to making informed decisions, utilizing the most beneficial systems, and successfully delivering high patient-centered care that patients deserve (Akachi & Kruk, 2017). However, due to rapid growth in population, there is a high demand for health care services, leading to challenges in finding ways to sustain the technological demands especially in the medical surgeon units, physical, and fiscal demands of patient care. Therefore, nurses working in medical surgeon units and family nurses should strive to improve their personal and professional characteristics to enhance quality. Besides, their focus should be based on proven quality enhancers such as utilization of electronic medical records to improve practice, research, policy, and sensible realities of creating quality infrastructure.

Concerning cost drivers, studies agree that technological changes are mostly attributed to the increasing spending on health care. Besides, Value-based payment (VBP) models are also associated with increase in health costs (Saleh & Shaffer, 2016). In medical surgeon units, new technology in diagnosis and treatment is significantly used to replace to replace the older technologies. Consequently, advancing technology in this unit tend to create remarkable impact on health care spending due to the conditions that the proficiency of such technology must be demonstrated before they are formally utilized in patient care (Okpala, 2018). Besides, family nurse practice is associated with high nurse and drug costs, high administrative expenses, costly end-of-life care, and unhealthy behaviors. In a nutshell, cost drivers present challenges in provision of quality health care in medical surgeon units and family nursing practice especially where financial resources are not sufficient to cater for rising technological needs and other factors critical for nursing practice.
