NR5OO Week 3 Assignment: Addressing Bias

Introduction

Anybody may experience issues of bias towards others or towards things that are being done. As a nurse, one is as well faced with risks of having a bias in their nursing activities. Nurses may have biases and prejudice which may influence their capability of delivering the best healthcare services for patients. The issue of bias may result in disparities in the process of delivery of care which may be intentional or may be non-intentional as opined by Obermeyer et al. (2019). Prejudice is an explicit form of bias and if one acknowledges its existence it makes it easier for it to be addressed. The issue of bias in the health setting may occur against gender, race, the sexual orientation of a person, and health conditions such as obesity. This paper helps in discussing the issue of bias and the steps for addressing it in the nursing practice.

Discussion of Bias

The profession that has been selected is a family nurse practitioner. This is a primary care role in the health setting and hence it may be faced with an extensive issue of bias on patients depending on their age, their culture, or their sexual orientation. For instance, a family nurse practitioner may take into account the issue of forgetfulness of an older patient to be the nature of aging of that person although it may be the beginning of another health concern
