NRS 430 Topic 1 DQ 1 Discuss why you have decided to complete your BSN at this time, and the concerns you have about completing your baccalaureate degree

Topic 1 DQ 1

In its report in 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) had four critical messages on how to improve the nursing profession and position it strategically to meet diverse patient needs in a reforming health system. One of the recommendation was nurses getting higher education, especially attaining baccalaureate degree through embracing lifelong and seamless learning and progression (Tierney et al., 2020). Therefore, my decision to complete my bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) is based on the need to improve my academic progression, skills, and meet the dynamic and changing healthcare needs.

I want to complete my BSN so that I can specialize after attaining my master of science in nursing (MSN) upon graduating and practicing for at least a year. I want to work as a specialist in different areas that include family nurse practice (FNP), dealing with geriatrics and even pediatrics. Through the BSN, I will improve my professional skills, and acquire knowledge and skills to offer quality care to diverse patient populations.

As a continuing and working student, my main concern is attaining a perfect balance of the different roles that I play. These include working, family life and responsibilities, giving services to community and participation in church, and becoming a student. The need to balance these aspects remains my biggest concerns as I began this BSN course. However, the GCU library offers a host of resources that make it easy to navigate these concerns and the need to write professional papers (GCU, 2018). These resources will be handy for me to improve my overall abilities while also executing other responsibilities.

The readings offer strategies that one can use to be a successful student. These include effective planning, time management, and seeking support as well as engaging the instructors to get a better understanding of the different aspects of study. I believe that using these strategies will help me manage my time well (Minority Nurses, 2015). Resources like the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” allow me to concentrate and understand that I can manage the class while also undertaking my other roles.
