The capacity to accurately identify people’s emotions based on their body language, facial expressions, and spoken word is known as emotional intelligence (Whitney, 2018). It is important for a nurse to have emotional intelligence as patients and families may be handling difficult circumstances and conditions. Nurses must be aware they are dealing with patients and families who are experiencing emotional distress. In regards to effective leadership, emotional intelligence is important as it brings out self-awareness, self-management, social skills, and resiliency (Cavaness, Picchioni & Fleshman, 2020). These abilities enable leaders to adjust their leadership style if needed. This enhances their ability to manage conflict, persuade others, manage change, and generate consensus. If someone has high emotional intelligence they know what their strengths and weaknesses are, otherwise known as self awareness. Those with high emotional intelligence are always acutely conscious of their feelings. Additionally, they are aware of how they interact with those around them. They are able to make wiser decisions in any situation thanks to their observations. An example of this would be when a nurse is able to focus on positivity when in a difficult or negative situation. This allows the nurse to maintain a clear mind so they can continue making the best choices possible for patients in their care.
