The proposed nursing intervention for this capstone project is the implementation of preceptorship and residency programs to enhance critical thinking, communication, practical, and technical skills required in the current health care system. After consultation with my preceptor about the existing policies within the organization, I created measurable outcomes expected from this project as detailed below.
Transformation in the Work Process
Nurses often spend more time with patients than any other health care professionals and also spend more time to pursue required equipment, medications and physicians, and completion of redundant paperwork. As such, adequate staffing of nurses will lead to better and more efficiency in delivery of nursing care.
Improvement in Quality of Patient Care
Addressing nursing shortage is likely to improve the performance of nurses, reduction in medical errors, increase patient satisfaction, and enhance nurse retention rates (Marc et al., 2019). Moreover, there will be reduction in morbidity and mortality rates. The patients will also be carefully monitored, thus, enhancing quality of care.
Increase in Job Satisfaction for Nurses
Often, nursing shortage make nurses to work long hours under demanding conditions, which can lead to injuries, fatigue, and job dissatisfaction. However, addressing nursing shortage leads to job satisfaction among nurses, which is an essential component in the lives of nurses in impacting on patient safety, quality of care, performance and productivity, commitment to the profession and organization, and retention and turnover (Tyczkowski & Reilly, 2017).
Enhance Clinical Outcomes
Higher nurse staffing ratios is associated with reduced patient mortality rates, reduction in medical complications, reduction in medical errors, and other desired patient outcomes. Adequate nurse staffing also leads to patient engagement, reduction in risk of infection, reduction in number of falls, and minimization in postoperative complications.
