NSG 4029 Week 3 Discussion

The ever-growing need and demand for safe and effective patient care have led various stakeholders, individuals, and institutions to formulate strategies to achieve the goals of such care.  Among them is establishing various frameworks such as the Framework for Safe, Reliable, and Effective Care. This framework is built on two major domains, the learning, and culture system, which have various components. The culture system has various components such as leadership, psychological safety, accountability, teamwork, and communication and negotiation (Frankel et al., 2017). On the other hand, the learning system entails transparency, reliability, improvement and measurement, and continuous learning. The implementation of these components aims to achieve the expected levels of patient care, for instance, teamwork and communication.

Emotional intelligent is important in nursing practices because it helps to understand people better (Whitney, 2018). Self-awareness is one of the important elements in emotional intelligent and it is the capacity to notice and comprehend your own feelings. Being conscious of the impact of your actions, moods, and emotions on other people goes beyond simply being aware of your own feelings. Developing self-awareness as a leader will strengthen not only individual performance but organizational performance as well. Ultimately, the immense amount of understanding, trustworthiness and wisdom that self-aware leaders possess equips them with critical skills for success.

Teamwork and communication refer to having effective groups capable of developing norms of conduct that can yield understanding, analyze needs, problems, and apply agreed-upon strategies in managing various situations. Hence the team can clearly communicate in various instances such as planning, reflection, and management of risk to ensure safe, reliable, and effective care. Nursing leaders have an important task in ensuring that various protocols are followed and adhered to (Huber, 2017). Therefore, the nursing leader has a role to play in implementing the component of teamwork and communication. The nurse leader has to offer a conducive environment devoid of intimidation and full of mutual respect to promote teamwork. The nurse leader has to establish communication channels and keep them open. The nurse leader should also timeously and effectively handle conflicts among the team members, encourage them to embrace the spirit of teamwork and respectful communication (Huber, 2017). In addition, the nurse leader should clarify responsibilities and roles to avoid conflicts.

Teamwork and communication can be applied in a clinical situation. For instance, treatment and management of a patient may need the input of both intra-and interdisciplinary collaboration for success. In one of the instances I have experienced, a patient with diabetes needed to be managed to prevent the condition from worsening, implying that various professionals’ expertise had to be brought on board. In such cases, teamwork is key as individuals bring their knowledge and skills together. The course is enhanced by effective communication, which ensures that conflicts are minimized for better patient care.
