Giltinane’s article on leadership identifies and analyzes three leadership styles that are

prevalent in healthcare organizations. The three leadership styles identified include transactional

leadership, transformational leadership, and situational leadership. The first leadership style is

transactional leadership, which is a dictatorial and task-oriented leadership style where rewards

are given to team members in exchange for compliance. Transformational leadership is a

nurturing leadership style where the leader inspires and empowers team members to reach his or

her full potential without being overbearing or dictatorial. Situational leadership allows an

individual to change leadership styles as needed in order to successfully lead others in any given

situation. Given the ever-changing realm of healthcare, the article suggests that situational

leadership is an ideal leadership style for a successful healthcare leader to utilize. The article also

identifies the positive and negative aspects of each leadership style followed by a reflective
