was established with the sole mandate then being combating the spread of malaria more so
during world war II. Over time it mandate expanded by venturing into research and response to
other health issues such as tuberculosis, immunization, and sexually transmitted diseases. The
location of its headquarter in Atlanta Georgia is significant since malaria was rampant in the
American south at that time. The US congress further expanded the mandate of the CDC to
include other issues of concern like environmental contaminants, bioterrorism, gun violence, and
chronic diseases. Since its inception, CDC has metamorphosed in its nomenclature up to the
current tile over the years. At one point in the 60s it was the National Communicable Disease
Center, then in the 70s it was the Center for Disease Control, in the 80s it was referred to as the
Centers for Disease Control and finally, in 1992, it became the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention the title that is held currently
The CDC is currently being run as an agency within the Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) and has its presence in more than 160 countries outside the US which forms
partnerships with those countries and also collaborates with locals, and the states level to monitor
and prevent disease outbreaks and implement disease prevention strategies and maintain national
health statistics. The CDC has five strategic areas of influence in society which include: ensuring
that the state health departments receive adequate, promoting global health through research,
minimizing mortality rates while strengthening surveillance and epidemiology, and revising
health policies to ensure that they are up-to-date with current research information (Klobucista,
