A Summary of the Proposed Policy and Practice Guidelines
The proposed organizational policy for Mercy Medical Center is the patient care policy. The
practice guidelines to implement this policy are through community training, awareness, and
patient education on the importance of diabetes examinations. This is important because it aims
to increase the number of patients undergoing foot exams and HgbA1c tests. The environmental
factors that impact these practice guidelines include the number of nurses in the hospital, the
number of hospital facilities, and interprofessional collaboration. Nurses play an essential role in
patient care and education, so having the correct number of nurses is needed to implement this
policy. The number of facilities used in the hospital also greatly determines the number of
patients coming in for prediabetes examinations. The Centers for disease control and prevention,
CDC, and the American Medical Association (AMA), launched an awareness program, “Do I
Have Prediabetes?” which turned out to be the first national prediabetes awareness campaign.
This implies that an awareness campaign is one of the most valuable tools in ensuring that more
people know about their prediabetes conditions, that is, the likelihood of having diabetes.
According to CDC in the National Diabetes Statistics Report in 2020, an estimated 13% of adults
over 18 years had diabetes, while 34.5% had prediabetes
