This toolkit has been developed to assist nurses learn the causes of medication administration errors (MAEs), how, as individuals, to prevent MAEs, ideas for their healthcare organization to implement safety improvement plans that will assist the staff to learn and maintain a safety culture, and how to ensure sustainability of the interventions within their organization. Nurses' perceived skills and attitudes about updated safety concepts: Impact on medication administration errors and practices.Journal of Nursing Care Quality, 32(3), 226-233. doi:10.1097/NCQ.0000000000000226 This study was designed to evaluate bedside nurses’ perception of their skills in relation to implementing safety concepts and their attitudes about those safety concepts, asking what the impact on medication administration errors is and subsequent adherence that ensures the medication administration process is safe. Despite electronic health records, computer physician order entry, bar code medication administration and medication sets, medication errors are still common. The study further asked how a nurses’ attitude impacts the implementation of updated safety practices and how that influenced medication administration. The study showed that individually, nurses appreciated the safety practices, but unit wise, not so much. This study also revealed that in terms of competency implementing the safety practices, nurses’ attitudes have not been studied in spite of attitudes affecting a nurses’ clinical decision making, and further research in needed. This article is a good reminder that nurses attitudes regarding updated safety practices does influence patient safety and that nurses need to continually evaluate their skills in regards to medication administration so they can work towards increasing patient safety through the development of a safety culture
