Over the past three weeks you have been exposed to many concepts, theories and terms related to psychology. Now is the time to make personal application of some of the terms you have studied. This personal application of concepts learned is one of the things that makes psychology such an interesting area of study. Not all courses of study have such a direct application to our own lives

APPLYING PSYCHOLOGY TO MY LIFE

There are many ways psychology is used in my everyday life. In one way would be with
my memory. My memory is sometimes off and on. I remember things at some point and
sometimes I forget things. It was very frustrating to my parents they believed I had selective
memory. Which wasn’t the case at all. I’d forget what I was told to do within the next few
seconds after being told. In my case that was considered having short-term memory. Short term
memory holds small amounts of information for short periods of time. We are consciously aware
of short-term memories for a dozen seconds or so (Jonides et al., 2008). Now that I’m older my
memory isn’t as bad, and I feel as if I can control most of them.
Another example of psychology in my life is motivation and emotion. Growing up
without my father it felt as if there was always a lack of motivation for me. Of course, my
mother was there but seeing my friends with their dad’s distracted me from my schoolwork a lot
of times. Emotionally, it hurt me sometimes not being enough for my dad to be there for me. My
counselor would offer me incentives like buying me food for lunch and having our own little
picnic talking about my life, friendships, and other relationships. My dad not being there affected
me in my life which caused me to stress eat along with other things. Stress eating eventually
turned into weight gain. Realizing this motivated me to lose weight. After graduating I began to
exercise including walking six miles. The more frequently and vigorously you exercise, the
healthier you will become and more weight you will lose. (Annesi & Marti, 2011).
Psychology also applies to my life due to my personality. I’m a very fun person and I
believe a good shoulder to lean on. In cosmetology school having a good positive personality
brings in more clientele. My clients would always compliment my personality and how I
brighten their day. This was the reason my clients came repetitively because I was more sociable

than other students. My self esteem was lower during grade school than it is now. Now that I’ve
outgrown it my self esteem is high. I’m very confident in myself than I was before. Believing
that you are beautiful, smart and intelligent regardless what other people think is one of the best
decisions I’ve made. Whether you believe that you’re beautiful or not there may be someone
who loves everything about you. Having a great personality takes you a long way in life believe
it or not. When you value yourself and have good self-esteem, you feel secure and worthwhile.
(Mayo Clinic Staff, 2017) Interviews have a lot to do with your personality. In high school there
was a program for teenagers to get summer jobs. We were taught how to respond to interviewer
questions. Not smiling in an interview is a big no but lucky for mew I smile a lot so that was
something I didn’t need to worry about. An interview, direct questioning is used to learn about a
person’s life history, personality traits, or current mental state (Craig, 2013; Murphy & Dillon,
2015). Which is why some interviews aren’t always related to a specific job. They want to get to
know the person behind the resume sent in. Which is why applying it to my everyday life is
beneficial because you never know who is watching or who you’ll meet in the process.
Furthermore, my health is something I deal with on an everyday basis. Whether I’m
stressed about school, weight gain or just life itself it can be very repetitive. There’s good stress
and bad stress. As stated in an article short-term stress can be helpful, but long-term stress is
linked to various health conditions (Christian Nordqvist, 2017). Things like reckless drivers
stresses me out every day. Just a couple of weeks ago a car continued driving while at a red light.
My light was green, and I noticed him coming towards me which frightened me a bit and made
me angry. Heading to my mother’s house which was a fifteen-minute drive I was upset all the
way there. My blood pressure was high by the time I arrived which caused me to get a headache.
Also, it was hard for me to get any sleep after that.
