Professionals Nursing is experiencing a changeover that must be acknowledge by all health care providers. There are several obstacles that must be overcome to adapt to the recent changes that are occurring as mentioned by The Institute of Medicine (IOM). IOM has developed an action plan and four key messages that structure the discussion and recommendations presented in their report. The action plan is noteworthy because it will provide a foundation for nursing and prompt the necessary changes. The IOM highlight the need for transformation in the nursing profession and point out the problems that prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to fast changing health care settings and how to solve them (Future of Nursing, 2010). The four messages that are highlighted in the IOM report can be used as tools to solve the problems. This is the summary of the IOM's four key messages. The IOM mentioned that nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training and one of the key issues preventing this from happening is regulatory barriers. The IOM place emphasis specifically on advance nursing education. Nurses must continue their education and function as nurses with the highest education possible. That overall can be achieved by improving the education system and placing emphasis on BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). To increase patient outcome, there must be collaboration within the healthcare, partnership with providers, other healthcare provider and value should be placed on nurses. Finally, policies within facilities require a better emphasis on research to adapt to the changes and advances in nursing. The IOM has direct influence on the nursing education system and opens more opportunities for BSN nurses.
