Recommend additional indicators and protocols to improve and expand outcomes of a current quality initiative.

Interprofessional Perspectives and Initiative Functionality Since 2004 the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services have required healthcare facilities to ensure that patients who are admitted without pressure ulcers do not develop pressure ulcers unless their current health condition proves otherwise (Peterson & Rogers, 2012). One QI initiative by Peterborough Regional Health Centre to prevent heel pressure ulcers was related to survey conducted in 2006 that identified that 21.1% of their patients had developed facility acquired heel pressure ulcers (Hanna-Bull, 2016). Reducing incidence rates and improving patient outcomes is the aim of KPNC QI initiative. A viewpoint that can influence whether a QI initiative is successful in preventing pressure ulcers is that healthcare organizations protocols vary when it comes to treating patients with pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers can be treated by wound care nurses, physical therapist, and/or bedside nurses. These healthcare professionals must be knowledgeable and practice competent patient care. Pressure ulcers are related to co-morbid conditions or result due to failure of clinicians and nursing staff to identify risk and implement a care plan that focuses on pressure ulcer preventive measures. Quality improvement initiatives are created to potentially reduce or eliminate such adverse events such as reducing the risk of developing wounds from pressure ulcers.
