Ethical and Policy Factors in Care Coordination Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,thank you for attending this presentation, on ethical and policy factors in care coordination, my name is Jennifer Bruce.Today I will be outlining the ethical and policy factors in care coordination and how they relate to nursing homes. I will also discuss how government policies affect care coordination, along with identifying how government policies can lead to ethical dilemmas in care coordination and perform a review of the code of ethics for nurses and its impact on care coordination and continuum of care. Care Coordination I will start by answering the question, what is care coordination. Care coordination is “the deliberate organization of patient care activities between two or more participants (including the patient) involved in a patient’s care to facilitate the appropriate delivery of healthcare services” (Scholz & Minaudo, 2015). The goal of care coordination is to eliminate fragmented care, ensure all patient needs are met, deliver safe care to patients and reduce costs associated with unnecessary emergency room visits and hospital readmission. By coordinating this care all parties involved have accurate up to date information regarding the resident plan of care and medications. Nursing home residents can benefit from care coordination because this patient population often has chronic diseases and they see multiple physicians. Explore how some government policies affect care coordination As with most programs, the government enacts legislature to regulate them, coordination of care is not excluded. These policies include the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010 to make insurance affordable, expand the Medicaid programs and lower the costs of healthcare. It “stresses the Triple Aim goals, introduced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), of improving patient care quality and satisfaction, improving population health, and reducing costs” (Vu et al., 2016).
