Jeff Ihaza, Rolling Stone, March 2021 ‘The ‘Punk Monk’ Teachings of Playboi Carti’. A musician called Playboi Carti has a cult-like following where the artist is mixing the genres of rap and rock into new revolutionary ways. His newest album “Whole Lotta Red” has been receiving lots of praise and criticism for breaking the boundaries between these two genres. The topic is very closely related to the chapters assigned because the artist is creating this new form of music that’s seen as groundbreaking today. He combines the devilish aspects of rock and the mobster of rap into this new category named “Punk Monk”. The teens are infatuated by this type of music and would preferably devote their time to an artist than anything else. It’s a new set of fans that I’ve never seen before like a religious devotion to the musician. The key concepts that I will be using in this analysis are Genre from Chapter 3 and the American Dream from Chapter 2. Both concepts very closely relate and help understand this new era of music started by Playboi Carti. Genre is a pattern of consistent style, content, or form that’s used to categorize an artistic composition like movies, music, and literature. Genre is crucial in pop culture as it reflects the histories, activities, and values of communities. It’s usually used to highlight the shift in culture and confine a category that reflects the audience’s lifestyle (Brandt and Claire. 2020: Chapter 3: pg. 61 to pg. 68). American dream is the belief that through hard work, determination, and initiative we all can make the U.S. the greatest nation. However, this idea is open to one’s interpretation and understanding of completing the American dream. It’s typically referred to as a myth as there is no clear definition of the American Dream it’s just an idea made up by us to maintain the order and structure of society (Brandt and Claire. 2020: Chapter 2: pg. 49 to pg. 55). The article about the rise of Playboi Carti talks about the songs being a “devilishly candid assessment” of his vision of combining rock and rap. The album “Whole Lotta Red” is designed AMM 1 This study source was downloaded by 100000878734763 from CourseHero.com on 01-31-2024 12:03:57 GMT -06:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/182580576/SOCI-ANALYSISdocx/ to keep the listener on edge into this new adventure that’s being defined as “Punk Monk” (Ihaza on Rolling Stone, March 2021). The theory I will be using in this example from the article is genre as it’s an establishment of a new shift in the music culture of rap and rock. (Brandt and Claire. 2020: Chapter 3: pg. 81). People have become bored with just listening to the same music repeatedly so musicians like Playboi Carti decided to step up and become a game changer. He decided to reach a new population by producing a unique sense of music that hasn’t been successful yet. With this new and rising genre comes a new community with a clear set of beliefs, values, and conventions. The type of people listening to this is the young rebel teens who will listen to this with their parents asking why this is even being made. This rise of the so-called “Punk Monk” is a signal for our culture to evolve into new places. With this new rise of “Punk Monk” comes a new lifestyle that teens and young adults are actively on. Playboi Carti’s fanbase is a cult-like community that will follow him like a ruler (Ihaza on Rolling Stone, March 2021). These cult-like fanbases especially this new one by Playboi Carti contradict the philosophy of the American Dream. A society where we should be dedicated to improving the nation instead has the youth following the actions of a musician. (Brandt and Claire. 2020: Chapter 2: pg. 49 to pg. 55). Playboi Carti has been long admiring into the hardcore punk scene he is constantly honoring anarchism, satanism, and violence. The album merchandise includes a lot of unsubtly Satanic and metal-themed clothing. This lifestyle is a problem for the vision of the American Dream as teens are being shown and become comfortable with the idea of killings, shooting, and murder. This type of music only adds more fire to the already deteriorating nation creating a generation of misfits. The two theories of pop culture are closely related to the rise of Playboi Carti as he innovated a new subgenre of rap and rock creating a new community of eccentrics. This new genre creates a new lifestyle that’s popular among teens which contradicts the idea of the American drea
