Transformational leadership is a framework that uses vision, inspiration, and intellectual
stimulation to motivate people toward change. There are four pillars of transformational
leadership: idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and
inspirational motivation. Transformational leadership is a theory that says the leaders work with
the team to identify what changes are necessary to improve conditions. Together they create a
guide and then act collaboratively to execute it (Romano, J. (2019). The transformational leaders
support an interoperable health system that empowers providers and communities to deliver
smarter, safer, and more efficient care, and promotes innovation at all levels. Transformational
leaders create a vision for their followers and guide the change through inspiration and
motivation.
The four pillars are essential in the health policymaking process. Idealized influence
entails leaders acting as role models in encouraging specific behavior (M’Lingera & Quantai,
2020). Nurse practitioners’ important health illness role models can encourage their followers to
promote through trustworthy relationships and together they can achieve an important health
goal. Followers believe that their leader prioritized their needs, which promotes the follower’s
sense of loyalty to the leader (Poghosyan & Bernhardt, 2018). Intellectual stimulation leader
encourages the followers to think deeply, undependably about situations and act according
(M’Lingera & Quantai, 2020). Doing this help promote autonomy and shared responsivity
amongst them by allowing them to be innovative by making their own right decision about their
health (M’Lingera & Quantai, 2020). Inspirational motivation is operationalized as clear
communication about high expectations and achieving the current and future goals (Poghosyan
& Bernhardt, 2018). Individualized consideration is the extent to which a leader attends to each
follower’s need and is a mentor, coach, or guide to the followers. This leader listens to the
concerns and needs of each follower and provides support (M’Lingera & Quantai, 2020).
