Like mentioned in our text, there is a “ growing emphasis on health care financing, community-based care, health promotion, and access to care” (McEwen & Wills, 2017, p. 520). As the various political parties and people debate which will be the best direction to take healthcare for our nation, there is surely going to be an impact on healthcare delivery and nursing in general. I remember in my school-age years being taught that the U.S. is a melting pot nation, composed of a diverse population. This cultural diversity is expected to increase in the future per McEwen & Wills (2017), as is noted in the text. Unfortunately, there are health disparities and inequity to note and bias and prejudice remains in healthcare and can affect those in need. “Health disparities are not only partially caused by deleterious socioenvironmental conditions and behavior risk factors but may also be influenced by bias that results in unequal, inferior treatment” (McEwen & Wills, 2017, p. 520).

Furthermore, health disparities have an effect on access to care and can make it crippling for some to get the care that they need. Education and health promotion with a focus on prevention to help decrease need for medical intervention. As time has progressed, there is advancement with technology in society and within the healthcare system. Communication methods with patients often include health portals and telehealth options, which can be complicated when looking at health disparities and socioenvironmental conditions for not everyone has access and ability to use technology at some of the levels required of these changes. This affects healthcare delivery for not everything follows the traditional office visits that once used to be the norm. Nurses are expected to “keep up” with these changes, especially when it comes to learning new EHR systems in the clinics and hospitals.
