According to Imogene M. King "(as cited in Khowaja, 2006)" the goal of nursing is health: promotion, maintenance, and restoration; the care of the sick or injured; and the care of the dying. Throughout King's lifetime, she focused on nursing care and theories. She expanded her conceptual system in the theory of goal attainment in multiple book chapters, articles, and journals. After retiring, she remained an active theoretical nursing contributor and implemented the theory of goal attainment in clinical practices. Health Purpose of Practice King's theory focuses on using conceptual systems that provide a framework for the nursing world. In the clinical world of nursing, nurses use communication to build a foundation to get to know the patients and their families. Establishing open communication and roles and finding out what the patient's goals are while being cared for is the base of building a foundation with the patient. Nursing care goals are to help individuals maintain health or regain health (King, 1990). King's theory of goal attainment is a conceptual framework to help nurses build on their knowledge and apply it while caring for patients. As proven in Araújo's (2017) study, the nurse-patient relationship is vital where results improved due to interaction and the close follow- ups patients had with the nurses during the study. HealthOperationally Defined in Practices The concept of interest is an interpersonal system in King's theory of goal attainment. In this system, the use of interaction, communication, roles, transactions, and stress are all incorporated (King, 1990). In the inpatient healthcare setting, the nurse can establish a role with the patient and family members, and from there, the interaction begins. The "transactions" between the patient and nurse depend on how well the communication is.
