The justification I have for choosing the FNP specialty has already been alluded to in step 1 above. The most important of this is that the FNP specialty was going to allow me to treat all types of diseases and injuries in the whole family without restricting me to one type of disease such as mental health (for the PMHNP). This way, I felt that I would better use the knowledge I gained in postgraduate training without having to waste any of it. Also, in addition to treating all kinds of illnesses and injuries in the whole family, I would also get the opportunity to treat all age groups across the lifespan. I felt that this would challenge me and make me a better clinician, given for instance that the doses of medications in children or volumes of infused fluids are drastically different in pediatrics compared to the same in adults. Lastly but not least, choosing the FNP specialty for me was also informed by the fact that it would carry more employment opportunities, especially at the grassroots community level. This is because since many physicians are not willing to practice in the rural community areas, FNPs will be much sought after to fill these clinician positions. The other reason for the potential plethora of job opportunities is that the FNP is fulfilling the same function of a general practitioner. Therefore, rural hospitals and community health centers with limited financial resources would prefer to have a clinician who can handle all the conditions competently instead of having to employ different specialists for the same.
