Week 3: Topic 3 DQ 1 Consider your role as a general or special education teacher. What considerations should you make when preparing, participating, and/or facilitating an IEP meeting? Imagine you have just completed an IEP meeting. What questions would you ask yourself to reflect on the meeting?

There are many factors to consider when participating in an IEP meeting. Can everyone that is

invited to the meeting attend and if not, would they like to send in another teacher for their

replacement or send notes to the facilitator of the meeting. What goals are currently being

achieved by the student and were the methods that were used appropriate? What goals does the

student need to work on and how can we achieve those goals? What can the teachers do to help

the student achieve the goals they are falling short on? Do we need to restructure any methods

currently being used to help achieve goals that the student is failing at? Ask the parents about the

students home life and study habits at home.

Reflection is a very important tool teachers should use when done with an IEP meeting. If a

someone could not attend the IEP meeting, would a better time or date work. Did we, as a team

come up with a solid plan to help the student achieve goals within the IEP. Are there better

methods that might work with the student. Did the parents get enough time to share their own

thoughts and opinions of goals and methods laid out in the IEP?
