In the state of Florida, nurse practitioners practice under restricted regulations. This means nurse practitioners are require to be supervised by a health care provider in order to provide patient care. The nurse practitioner must maintain a written agreement for prescriptive authority. Prescriptions for schedule II controlled substances are limited to seven day supply, except for psychiatric controlled substances, for which there is not limit. Only psychiatric nurse practitioners are allowed to prescribe psychiatric medications to children under 18 years old. Nurse practitioners are required to complete three hours of continuing education every two years on the safe and effectiveness of prescription of controlled substance. (American Medical Association, 2017). Limitations of practice After certification, advance practice register nurses may perform medical diagnosis, order and interpret tests, and provide treatment plans, but under the supervision of a physician. A written protocol is required between the nurse practitioner and a supervising physician; this written protocol must include a detailed description of all duties.
